Job Description:
Under general supervision, provides professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific differences in the patient population including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. This includes physiological, psychological, and developmental differences unique to each group.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Records and/or verifies patient data including but not limited to: vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes. Assists medical assistants when required.
Assists physicians and mid level practitioners with exams and procedures when necessary. Maintains efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of infusion room.
Mixes (when required) and administers chemotherapy, hydration, and other medications under direct supervision of a physician using appropriate techniques.
Assesses patient for changes in condition, assesses labs, assesses reports, and consults physicians or mid level practitioners regarding dose modifications, problems, and symptom management.
Demonstrates appropriate technical and critical thinking skills in the maintenance and use of central lines and venipunctures.
Performs and documents nursing assessments, patient teachings, and medication administration (following the “five rights”) in accordance with Unit Standards.
Maintains knowledge of reimbursement procedures. Completes all treatment charge captures. Assures preauthorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to administration of therapies.
Demonstrates knowledge of pole mounted and ambulatory pump uses maintenance. Properly documents on the usage of ambulatory pumps.
Performs duties of triage nurse according to Unit Standards when applicable.
Maintains current knowledge of Oncology Nursing by participating in ongoing educational opportunities.
Maintains all license and certification requirements.
Assists with extra duties and staff census requirements when deemed necessary.
